Mistake Number 2:
Stop, sit, reward
That old chestnut – I know it makes you feel like you are doing something, anything, to slow your dog down and rest your weary arms. You stop walking, ask your dog to sit and reward him with a treat and set off again, your dog pulls again and you repeat …. and repeat..and repeat.
Forget about what you are thinking …. what is your dog thinking?
You are rewarding your dog for stopping and sitting still – you are NOT rewarding him for walking calmly by your side. You are rewarding the wrong behaviour.
Your dog probably doesn’t want to sit, he wants to get where he is going like you do so you will both get frustrated.
